I recently upgraded my Hewlett-Packard HP Vectra VLi8 PC from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000. The upgrade was successful—except that my TEAC IDE CD-ROM drive no longer works. Win2K sees the CD-ROM drive but tells me The device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (Code 31). Can you give me any advice?

I've seen this problem before it relates to Adaptec's Easy CD Creator on a Win2K system. (For information about that particular problem, see Paula Sharick, "Various Hardware Issues; New Bug Fixes," http://www.winnetmag.com, InstantDoc ID 23274.) I suspect, however, that your situation is upgrade-related, in which case a registry hack might resolve the problem. Open a registry editor and go to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} subkey. Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values, then restart your computer.
