Main Article    Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000

Host Integration Server (HIS) 2000 is a member of the Microsoft .NET Enterprise Server family, which also includes SQL Server 2000, BizTalk Server 2000, Exchange 2000 Server, Application Center 2000, Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000, Commerce Server 2000, and Mobile Information Server 2001. This product family, in which HIS 2000 plays an important role, provides a new platform that lets organizations better use the Internet for their e-business. HIS 2000 integrates the Internet and legacy mainframe and AS/400 systems. For example, Figure A illustrates a company's e-commerce infrastructure that uses HIS 2000 and other .NET servers. Suppose the company accepts a customer order from the company's Web site. The business-to-consumer (B2C) order application on Commerce Server 2000 handles this order transaction, validates the customer's purchase order (PO) and credits, then puts the order request into the PO transaction system on SQL Server 2000. Through the COM Transaction Integrator (COMTI) integration tool on the HIS 2000 system, the PO transaction system asks the back-end enterprise resource planning (ERP) system running on the mainframe to generate a business-to-business (B2B) PO, then sends the received PO to the B2B order fulfillment system on the BizTalk Server 2000 system. BizTalk Server 2000 uses XML technology to translate the PO from the company's proprietary format to the PO format of its fulfillment partner's system, then sends the translated PO to the company's fulfillment partner. The partner fulfills the order, ships the goods to the customer, and returns a fulfillment confirmation to the company. BizTalk Server 2000 translates the confirmation to the company's format and sends it to the PO transaction system on the SQL Server 2000 machine, which, through HIS 2000, updates the back-end ERP system.
