Why is my Windows XP DHCP client address set to 0.0.0.0?

A. You might experience a problem with the DHCP client address if you uninstall Symantec's Norton AntiVirus but leave the application listed as a dependency for the DHCP service. If you check the System log, you might notice the following error:

Error 7003 - DHCP service failed to start because dependency service SYMTDI will not start.

To resolve this problem, perform the following steps:

  1. Start a registry editor (e.g., regedit.exe).
  2. Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcp registry subkey.
  3. Double-click DependOnService.
  4. Remove SYMTDI from the list, then click OK.

  5. Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

This one is brilliant!!!!

I was racking my brain for a couple of hours on this stooooopid issue. Very disinclined to use Symantec software, now that I know that they insert these sorts of things into your system. Little time bombs waiting to go off.

Norton 2002 really pissed me off - I literally spent 10 hours over the last week trying to figure this out, and it all came down to a simple registry key dependency issue. Oh well. Such is the way of technology.

Thanks very much for the tip. It saved me from having to get out the old sledge hammer :)

Heap of Thanks!

Your fix didn't immediately work as I didn't find the "DependOnService" in the path you indicated ... for whatever reason. But it was the clue. I went to the Edit/Find funciton in the Regedit program and just typed in DependOnService. I then found 4 instances of DependOnServices for "SYMTD1," which I had elsewhere read was a culprit. I deleted them all but it still didn't work. I then went through DependOnGroup (the other option in the error message when you try to start DHCP Services) and didn't find anything I dared delete. So I rebooted and 'Voila!' ... It works.

Thanks again
