Troubleshooting a Notebook Boot Problem

I have a Dell notebook running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). When I boot in normal mode, I get a blue screen followed by the error message No More IRP Stack Locations. The system boots fine in Safe Mode. I haven't made any changes to the notebook configuration, so I'm at a loss to explain the behavior. Do you have any idea what the problem might be?

I've seen this behavior before on a Dell Latitude D600, although I doubt the problem is unique to Dell or that Dell is any more susceptible than any other manufacturer. The Microsoft article "Antivirus software may cause Event ID 2011" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid= 177078) says that antivirus software is the culprit, but I've seen it on a system that wasn't running antivirus software.

Microsoft suggests editing the registry to increase the I/O request packet (IRP) stack size, but that didn't resolve the problem on my system. Instead, I put the hard disk in another D600 notebook and let XP redetect the system chipset and peripherals. This step reset a corrupt I/O driver to the original value. When I put the disk back in the original notebook, it continued operating properly.
